Kiddie Fun shops
(Art, Hele, Homelife, English)
Kiddie Fun shop is an event where homeschoolers can learn about business and sell their original products, from food to useful items. In 2020 we sold mango floats and that business went fairly well, we didn’t do it last year but this year we decided to make some wooden boxes, inspired by my mom’s original design when she needed more pots and wanted to use some of the wood she never used, and that caused her to make the boxes, we also sold some plants from my mom’s garden since she had a lot of them growing and was running out of space to put them in. We made our wooden boxes in the laundry room, what we did first is that my mom cut the wood and made them into trapeziums using a very loud machine, and I and my brother sanded them to make the wood smooth. At first, we sanded the wood manually using sandpaper, after that, we glued the wood together to form boxes and tighten it so it will hold its shape, we would leave it for the whole night, and in the morning is when we would sand it again with the machine. After sanding the boxes, I had to sand and glue some small wooden triangular prisms beneath the box to give an effect that made it look like it was levitating, sanding the wood was a very tiring and frustrating process since my hands and fingers would get tired and dirty from that activity. We only had a week to make at least a few of the products, because by the end of the week, we had to advertise our products online, the last couple of steps we need to do was to paint the boxes, we wanted our audience to be all ages but we also remembered that there would be mostly children at the venue so we painted well known cartoon and game characters such as, Among us, Minecraft, Marvel, Pokémon, etc.. Me and my mom mostly did the painting since my brother is not really good at it and my sister is still to young to paint detailed work.
The next product to focus on when we were done with the boxes is the plants, we had to make sure they were healthy and lush, we propagated the turtle vine lamp a month earlier, my mom cut off some overgrown turtle vines and me and my brother had to put the baby leave in a pot individually and carefully since we needed to put a lot in one put but at the same time make sure they have space to grow their roots during that one month. Another plant we had cut off is the photos plant, my mom had been growing that plant even before we had joined the Kiddie Fun shops event, she was so proud of how long the plant grew just by its roots staying diluted in water all these months after we had cut off the photos plant we just put it in smaller glass jars to sell.
While making the boxes, the Kiddie Fun Shops was gonna have a mini art gallery and a coincidence was that I started a painting a week before the announcement, I was inspired to paint since what I was currently learning then, was about the arts of the renaissance and baroque periods. And I wanted to make an original painting that sort of resembled the period but also make it feel modern at the same time, so I tried to reference a Renaissance painting by Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to my work, by using darker colors, especially for the background, also limiting my color pallet to a few colors, and making my subject the center of the canvas. But I was using acrylic paint instead of oil paints, I also started my initial sketch on my iPad so I won’t have to erase or redraw stuff when I can have them all planned out before ruining the canvas. Let me say I have not used acrylic paint in a long time, and the only thing I practiced with is watercolor and gouache, I started doing the darker areas first, such as the shadows and temporary line art, then I started to go to the lighter tones and I would try to find some colors that would help the blending process, also I have to be very quick with painting since acrylic does not reactive unlike watercolor or gouache so that was another thing to worry about. I worked on the painting for an entire week and when I was done, I disliked it because the face just morphed into something else than what I originally imagined, but time was up and I had to submit the artwork to the people who will hand mine and others works at the venue. When I finally saw my painting at the venue, I cringed, but my Auntie liked it and wanted to buy it from me, I said it cost 2000 pesos because my back died the whole time I was painting and I felt like the price was enough and my aunt gladly paid me the amount, so I guess I earned an extra 2000 for my kiddie fun shops.

Did you ever wonder how water goes to the plant, I don’t mean how rain reaches the plant, I meant how the plant absorbs the water and brings the water up since there is gravity bringing it down, how can water reach the upper part of the plant? First, we need to understand our key component, water, water molecules like to stick together, they have attracted to one another and surface by weak electrical attractions. When water molecules stick together by hydrogen bonds, scientists call it cohesion. When water molecules stick to other materials, scientists call it adhesion. There is a thing called capillary action, which combines the effects of cohesion and adhesion, cohesion is the attraction of one particle in a material to another, while adhesion is the attraction between unlike substances.
So how does this capillary action suppose to help us understand how water reaches the upper section of the plant? Well, the movement of a liquid across the surface of a solid is caused by the adhesion. When you place a tube in water, the water automatically moves up the sides of the tube because of adhesion, even before you apply any sucking force. Some pulling force needs to tug on the column of water in the vein of a plant to keep the process of capillary action moving water up the tree. Without a force to counteract the weight of the water in the vein, adhesion would carry the water only a limited distance upward. The force that pulls water up through the veins of a tree is called evaporation, so the hotter the weather the more water goes up. Usually at the top of the plant are the leaves, well in those leaves there are tiny little holes called stomata, the holes are like the end of a straw that let the evaporated water out, the stoma can close when too much water is evaporated, but even if the stomata can close if the plant is not given enough water it will wilt.
(power of true success, Following God)
When starting the kiddie fun shops, I was heavily discouraged and just didn’t want to do the it since I have other things to work on, but, I learned that perseverance can lead up to a greater reward, so I continued to push forward my negative thoughts and help, I did complain at times when I get too tired or just lazy, which is pretty normal when the work gets too difficult. I learned from the Power of True Success that endurance is more than physical strength it is also about spirituality strong. The word Kakopatheo means to suffer trouble, to be afflicted, or to undergo hardship, which we experienced and anechomai means to hold oneself up against, to put up with, or to bear with, which I also did.
When kiddie fun shops were announced our mom encouraged us to join since needed some extra source of income because Covid hit pretty hard and the price of the Philippine peso grew. God had given us a sign and a chance to earn some extra money through kiddie fun shops, so we had to grab the opportunity or else it was too late.
(Music)
So my piano teacher, teacher Melody, wanted me and some of her other students to play the piano for an open show for the kiddie fun shops. She invited me and my bother to play twinkle star variations with other kids, I was very nervous since this was a last-minute request and I was extremely scared about performing to a lot of people and some strangers, I am not usually super frightened when performing if I practiced long enough and was able to prep myself beforehand. But since this was a quick request and I agreed without giving a second thought my hands were shaking quite a bit and I could feel the adrenaline my body was pumping to me. And when I was on I did perfectly well, did I overreact? Yes. Will I overreact again? Yes again. What was the point of my writing this? I do not know I just wanted to inform you what I was feeling. How is this related to music and did you just waste my time reading this paragraph? Um. I do not know and yes I did waste your time and I do not regret it, but I will make this related to music now although it won’t be related to the kiddie fun shops anymore.
( Music, history )
What I learned was the Baroque period, was that opera was formed/invented. The Baroque period ( 1685-1757) was an era after the Renaissance period, the baroque period was full of drama, intensity, bold and bright colors, and exaggeration. War was everywhere during that period since science was expanding, scientists began to improve weapons for war. Everyone wanted to take their minds off the war and to enjoy some entertainment, so what else to do than go see an opera, opera back then was plainer you can say, there was only one tone/emotion unlike the classical period you have different emotions and you felt like you were on a rollercoaster. Then in the late Renaissance period a group of musicians called the Florentine Camerata improved opera, one of the men in that group was Galileo’s dad, and they were upset with opera they thought that it was too complicated, that music was down in the dirt and that it was up to them to save them , so they wanted to revive ancient Greek drama styles and referenced from them. Opera changed how vocal music was formed, the main two types of opera, one is comedy and the other is a more serious version, in the serious version of opera the vocal music was super difficult to perform so the singers who do perform it became very popular, meanwhile comic opera was for fun and very opposite from serious opera. Although opera originated in Italy it started getting attention in France, Great Britain, and other European countries during the classical period.

So after we did the hard labor we had to put a price on our work, we had to make sure that when we price our products we had to include-
- Time, how much of our time we put into these products.
- Materials, how much did our materials cost in order to make these products.
- Quantity, is this product easy to make? can you make a lot in just a short time? if so then no need to make it expensive, but if it is then you have to up those prices.
- Labor, how much effort did we put into this product, if we underpriced our products does this mean our efforts were down the drain?
- Affordability, but that doesn’t mean we should overprice our products, we have to make sure our customers are willing to pay the price.
If we do not account for these then we could overprice or underprice our products and both options are not good, this is why we had made a list (down below) in excel sheets to make a note of how much our materials cost, how many products can we make with these materials, etc. We (my mom, brother, and I) had to find out our profit, so after we listed the prices of our materials and added them together, we found out our total price per box and SRP after deducting it, our total was 56.12 Pesos. This doesn’t sound like a lot I know, but after we had sold our items, altogether we earned around 6000+ pesos, sadly we do not have a picture of our customer’s purchases from the kiddie fun shops since we forgot, but we got the online orders down below, although we mostly earned from our family members and friends it just means they love and support us.
