Volume of odd-shaped objects experiment

A rock has volume, but you don’t know how much volume. We can use this experiment to find out.

This experiment is supposed to help you find the volume of some odd-shaped objects by using the general property that matter takes up space.

What we need is a rock, string, water and graduated cylinder. Put some water in the graduated cylinder, record how much water you put. Then tie the string to the rock, make sure it is strong enough to carry it. Now use the string and lower the rock in the water, let it settle at the very bottom. Record the level of the water with the rock. Finally find the volume of the object by subtracting the reading water from the reading water and the rock.

Your final answer is the volume of the rock. This experiment can be used with other objects, example: a pen, pencil, spoon, a small toy figure..etc. You can find out the volume of those objects if you are interested!
