Making Parol

It’s Christmas time! And why not get traditional and get a parol, well make actually. The parol also written as paról or parul, from Spanish farol ( meaning lantern), is a Filipino ornamental lantern displayed during the Christmas season. The parol is a traditional part of the Panunulúyan pageant in the nine-day Christmas Novena procession during the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. Parols are covered with bright LED lights, and different shape.

The materials we used for the parol are cellophane, dowels, rubber bands, wooden sticks, tissue paper, string, hot glue, glue stick and lights (optional).

Below are the steps to make the parol:

  1. Form the woods into a V shape. We use the wooden sticks and rubber bands and tie the wood together on one end into a V. Make four Vs.
  2. Get the 2 Vs and another extra wood. Place the one of the V on top of the other V and form a star, use the extra stick and tie it on top, make sure the shape is a star. Do this again to make another star and you should have two stars.
  3. Use the dowels and attach them in the middle of the star using a glue gun. Put the dowels on the corners of the pentagon.
  4. After the glue has dried, add the other star on top and use the glue gun to stick the star on top. Then use rubber bands and tie the corners of both stars together.
  5. Once everything has dried, attach the cellophane to cover the stars using a glue stick. Make sure to cover up the star properly, leave at least one spot without cellophane so we can add the lights later on.
  6. Insert the lights and close up with the cellophane.
  7. After adding in the lights, time to add decorations to the star, use the tissue paper or onion skin/japanese paper and cut them to little squares.
  8. Twist the little squares to make them look pointy. You can stick the pointy papers wherever you want.
  9. Now use another set of tissue/japanese paper for the tail. Make the paper into a big square, then fold it to triangles and cut it alternating.
  10. Now just stick the tissue paper at the bottom of the star and add a string on top and your done!
